The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Douglas Hodge
Nominated for Best Actor in a Musical, La Cage aux Folles
“This is so exciting! My publicist called me [about the nomination], and then I got a text from the guy who is driving me saying, ‘Woohoo! Congrats!’ I’ve already gotten about 12 other texts from everyone on the show. I scrolled through the list [of 11 nominations] and it seems like everybody has been given a nod, which is wonderful. [Kelsey Grammer and I] are like the odd couple, and the show is so balanced; it’s a two-hander. I was aware that the Tonys have such importance in terms of the box office and the prestige of the show, so I am really honored. I feel like I’ve worked 20-odd years just honing, refining and finessing, and I’m trying to use everything I’ve learned in this role. I’ve spent a whole career trying to get this right, and it feels fantastic.”
